Fair cake-cutting is the division of a cake or resource among N users so that each user is content. Users may value a given piece of cake differently, and information about how a user values different parts of the cake can only be obtained by requesting users to “cut” pieces of the cake into specified ratios. Many distributed computing problems which involve resource sharing can be expressed as...

A large number of interesting combinatorial optimization problems like M3SAT, MC fall under the class of constraint satisfaction problems. Recent work by one of the authors [34] identifies a semidefinite programming relaxation that yields the optimal approximation ratio for every CSP, under the Unique Games Conjecture. In this work, we present an efficient rounding scheme that achieves th...

Stabilization in H ∞ R ( D )

It is shown that for H∞ R (D) functions f1 and f2 with inf z∈D (|f1(z)|+ |f2(z)|) ≥ δ > 0 and f1 being positive on the real zeros of f2, then there exists H∞ R (D) functions g2 and g1, g−1 1 with norm controlled by a constant depending only on δ and g1f1 + g2f2 = 1 ∀z ∈ D. These results are connected to the computation of the stable rank of the algebra H∞ R (D) and to results in Control Theory.

Some Geometry of H(r)

If X is a complete metric space, the collection of all non-empty compact subsets of X forms a complete metric space (H(X), h), where h is the Hausdorff metric. In this paper we explore some of the geometry of the space H(Rn). Specifically, we concentrate on understanding lines in H(R). In particular, we show that for any two points A, B ∈ H(Rn), there exist infinitely many points on the line jo...

Minimal surfaces in H × R

We construct complete embedded minimal surfaces in H × R. The first one is a finite total curvature surface which is conformal to S \ {p1, ..., pk}, k ≥ 2; the second one is a 1-parameter family of singly-periodic minimal surfaces which is asymptotic to a horizontal plane and a vertical plane; the third one is a 2-parameter family of minimal surfaces which have a fundamental piece of finite tot...
